Charming Home description
Casa Beija Flor or “Hummingbird House” is a beach front house next to Canavieiras in the south of Bahia, near the Brazilian town of Ilheus. The house was designed and built by the famous architect, Ricardo Salem, and is light and spacious. The swimming pool comprises part of the large terrace, which is integrated with the coconut plantation and the beach. There are two indoor sitting rooms, one with satellite television. The kitchen is totally equipped with china and cutlery. The house has a generator, a private water supply and extensive gardens. The beach in front of the house, although public, is almost deserted. This is the perfect place to relax with a group of friends.
Description of Bedrooms. The house comprises 5 bedrooms For 10 persons. All bedrooms large and en-suite with air conditioning and mosquito nets, for those wanting to sleep with only the sea breeze. The bathrooms are large and hot water is provided from solar heating with electrical back up. Bed linen together with both bath and beach towels are provided.
Services. The house has a staff of 6. The house is run by an administrator who will visit each day to provide help and assistance. In addition there is a cook/housekeeper, 2 cleaning ladies, laundry woman and a night watchman. A gardener/houseman is in charge of the pool and all the house maintenance. The staff work from 7am to 4pm. The cook can provide a simple supper for reheating or if required, arrangements can be made to hire an evening chef. One of the staff is used to shopping and the supermarkets deliver to the house. The house has a functioning routine but is adaptable to personal needs and this should be coordinated though the Administrator. Any menus to do with lunch and dinner should be organized in plenty time to make sure the staff can look after you properly.
Position. The house is 4 kilometers from Canavieiras which is one hour south by car on a good paved road from the nearest airport at Ilheus. The last 2 kilometers is on a dirt road.
Around and About. The city of Canavieiras is well known as a centre of sport fishing. As such there are many options open to all kinds of fishermen including river fishing, bottom fishing at sea and marlin fishing on the world famous Charlotte Bank. To investigate all these fishing opportunities go to www.bahiapescaesportiva.com.br . Yellow-fin Tuna and Dorado are often caught when marlin fishing, both lovely eating and perfect for sashimi. In season, prawns and lobsters can be bought fresh from the local fishermen. Other ordinary products such as beef, pork and chicken can be purchased in the local markets. It is also possible to locally buy a small suckling pig for the BBQ.
Restaurants. Canavieiras is not a well known tourist location but nevertheless the unsophisticated local restaurants serve excellent local dishes at reasonable prices. Canavieiras is 10 min by car from the house. If you like to eat lunch out on the beach there are several sea-front restaurants about a half hour walk along the beach, or 3 min by moto taxi. Few restaurants stock wine although they have beer and caipirinha’s. Most restaurants are very happy for you to bring your own wine which can be purchased in the two main town supermarkets. Eating outside in the evening is mainly in the Port area of the town, as the beach restaurants do not open after lunchtime.
Oysters. If you are an oyster lover the cook will order as many as you like from the local producer who will bring them to the house and open them. He needs a morning’s notice for harvesting fresh from his growing area.
There are three types of fishing available.
River Fishing. Small boats for Snook and Bass fishing in the river can be rented for a day or half day and cost about R$ 150/$200 for the day with all equipment and bait.
Bottom Sea Fishing. Canavieiras is now an important destination for sea fishing in Brazil with some very good catches being made on a regular basis. Capt “Tuba” is a well known and successful captain with Bahia Pesca. Main species are Wahoo, Dourado, Tuna and Amberjack. All can be kept by the fishermen for eating.
Marlin Fishing. Canavieiras is one of the world’s most prolific blue marlin destinations for fishing the famous Charlotte Bank, which is situated 28 kilometers (18 miles) from the bar of the river. In the season 2009/2010 over 50 blues were caught and released by fishermen with Bahia Pesca. Guests of the house from November to January caught 10 marlin in ten outings, five of them over 500lbs each. Marlin are always released but Wahoo, Dourado and Tuna are usually kept for eating.
The boats that go out for bottom fishing and marlin are 30 feet long with two big marine turbo engines and a crew of three. They carry a lot of very good (and expensive) fishing tackle for a day that lasts from 6.30 am until 5.30pm. For serious sea fishermen it is a great experience, but first timers should remember it is a long day and sea sickness can be a problem. The cost for a one day charter is R$2500 for bottom fishing and R$3000 for marlin (reflecting the extra fuel costs).
River trips.
It is an easy matter to hire a boat for a river trip, to visit the bar at the river mouth or even for a day visit to Belmonte which lies to the south. They will pick you up and bring you back to the landing point at the bottom of the garden.
Nature.
There are a wide variety of birds in the garden, a completely different variety in the river estuary, another different lot up the river and finally a fourth group to be found on the nearby farms and cacao plantations. For bird watchers it is a paradise. We have seen 5 different species of Woodpecker in the garden.
Other activities.
Our neighbor nearby has horses available for beach rides and teaches both wind and kite surfing with all equipment available for hire. We can also set up a tennis court at low tide and rackets and net are available.
Rates are in Reais: The rate varies, but is arround: 1 Dollar= 1,7 reais.
